Dating Safety

>    The first (and most obvious) tip for online dating safety is to meet your date in a public place. Once you are sure the person is not a psycho ax murderer, you can invite them around for dinner or coffee, but until you have spent a few hours in their company, it is sensible to stay in a populated public place just in case you need to make a quick getaway.

 >     It should also go without mentioning that it is probably unwise to arrange for a date to pick you up from home until you know them better. I also prefer not to give my home telephone number out—one date persisted on harassing me with constant phone calls, so now I stick to giving my mobile number only. I can ignore that if necessary!

 >      Drinking yourself into oblivion on a first date is a definite no-no for both sexes, but for women, too much alcohol can lead to serious lapses of judgement. When we are drunk, we have a tendency to do things we might not do if we were sober, so before you get stuck into that second bottle of wine over dinner, think twice about what sort of impression you are making, and if you are the type who regularly ends up pole dancing after three vodkas, stick to tap water for the evening.

 >      For a first date, it is wise to organise your own transport to and from the allotted meeting place. If you drive, take your car and make sure you have enough fuel to get home. If your only option is public transport, check out the bus and train times before you leave home and always carry enough money for a taxi if necessary. That way, if you need to leave in a hurry, you are not reliant on your date and you will not end up stuck in the middle of nowhere, helpless, and potentially in danger.

 >       Always tell your friends and family exactly where you are going and who this person is (or at least as much information about them that you know). Perhaps arrange to call a friend at a set time just to let them know you are ok, or even make plans to meet up with friends at the end of the night—both scenarios is perfectly acceptable on a first date.

 >      And finally, listen to your gut instincts. Our intuition is our sixth sense, and it is the most powerful sense we have. Never ignore any misgivings about a date, either before, during, or afterwards. If something doesn’t feel quite right, but you can’t quite put your finger on what that “something” is, go with your gut feeling, make your excuses, and cut the date short. There is no need to be rude, but on the other hand, you are perfectly entitled to leave when you want.
