Hi, Guys! It’s Bittu again. How are you? An operating system (OS) is system software that manages computer hardware and software support and presents common services for computer programs. There are many types of computer operating system are available but mainly 4 types of computer operating system such as Windows, Linux, Unix and Mac is very popular. Today, I will show you Comparison Between Unix & Linux Operating System. So read this article from the beginning to the end.
Comparison Between Unix & Linux Operating System
The primary difference is that Linux and Unix are two different Operating Systems though they both have some common commands.
Unix OS (as UNIX)
UNIX is a proprietary software and it is a self-contained operating system. In general, UNIX OS does work on Command Line Interface. Recently, UNIX OS is developed for Graphical User Interface.
UNIX is not flexible like Linux. It is less adjustment or compatibility like various hardware. UNIX installation is a very difficult task and well-defined hardware instruments are required and it is installed only in a definite CPU.
UNIX does not get in freeware or does not get freeware. For this reason, you cannot change it and you cannot buy the edition of the UNIX.
UNIX installation is quite expensive because for installation the special hardware is required and it can be operated in the processor of CPU.
UNIX comparatively supports fewer file systems and this supports below-mentioned file systems: zfs, js, hfx, gps, xfs, gps, xfs, vxfs etc.
UNIX operating system is not portable. There are fewer editions in UNIX operating system. Other separate editions are:
- AIS (IBM)
- BSD
- HP – UX
- Iris
UNIX OS 1970 was developed by AT&T, Bell Laboratories in USA. (Bell Labs is now under the ownership of Nokia from 2016.)
UNIX operating system is used in an expensive and high-end computer system, large server systems, mainframes etc.
UNIX is developing and maintaining and is updated by AT & T developers. But, they do not encourage the UNIX OS in Open Source Developments.

Linux OS (as Linux)
Linux is an open source operating system (based on UNIX). LINUX is mainly the name of Karnal. Karnal is the heart of OS. Graphical User Interface and application transforms it in another Operating system.
In LINUX OS, command line interface is being there along with graphical User Interface. LINUX comes to KDE and Gnome in the Graphical User Interface [GUI]. Command Line Interface is additional. interface. Command Line Interface is additional.
LINUS is a very flexible operating system so it is suitable for all hardware systems. And LINUX is installed in most of the CPU. Moreover, it is very easy to install.
LINUX OS is an open source operating system. You can get its source code in free of cost. You can read it, and make it as your wish and you can also install it on your machine. However, you cannot sell it because it comes under the GNU GPL License.
There are so many job opportunities in LINUX and a huge set of file system supports it. LINUX installation is generally very cheap and no special hardware needs.
There are so many systems are supported in LINUX. Such, Linux supported files are: xfs, ramfs, nfs, vfat, cramfsm ext3, ext4, ext2, ext1, ufs, autofs, devpts, NTFS etc.
There are so many editions of the LINUX operating system. The distributions are mentioned in below:
- Redhat
- Slackware
- Debian
- Solaris
- Ubuntu
- CentOS
- Fedora
- LinuxMat etc.
In 1990, Linux was made by Linus Torvalds. However, Richard Stallman makes a huge contribution in GNU GPL licence.
LINUX operating system focuses on home based PC and LAPTOP. But, due to the popularity and stability, it is used in office, mobile phone, and server and also in high-end systems along with embedded systems.
LINUX is doing without any cost to the worldwide developers. But, the developments are done by LINUX Torvalds.
