Ghanteswari Temple:
The Ghanteswari Temple is situated at a distance of 33 kilometers from south-west of Sambalpur. It is located on the banks of River Mahanadi. This temple is one of the most ancient holy temples of Odisha. This temple is dedicated to Mata Ghanteswari. This temple is surrounded by many bells, that’s why peoples call this temple Ghanteswari Temple. These bells are also used to warn and guide early sailors. The temple was built by the early sailors. It is known as the “lighthouse without light”. A large number of devotees come here from different places to complete their prayer.
Huma Temple:
The Huma Temple is located at a distance of 23 kilometers from the city of Sambalpur, on the banks of River Mahanadi. This temple is also known as the “leaning tower of Huma”. It was constructed in 1670, by King Baliar Singh, who was the 5th king of the Chauhan dynasty of Sambalpur. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. According to history, there is a legend behind the construction of the Huma Temple. Local villagers said that once there was a milkman who used to go across river Mahanadi to worship Lord Shiva. He used to offer milk to the Lord every day. One day, to his surprise, the rock idol consumed the milk offered by the milkman. This miraculous incident paved way for the construction of the temple. Mahashivratri is the main festival of this temple. During this time a large number of devotees come here for offering milk to the idol of Lord Shiva, in Huma Temple.
Samaleswari Temple:
Goddess Samaleswari is a symbol of strong religious force in western part of Odisha. The temple is situated in the heart of Sambalpur district. In ancient time Sambalpur region was popularly known as Hirakhanda. Once upon a time, Mata Samaleswari was also worshiped as Jagatjanani, Adishakti, Mahalaxmi, and Mahasaraswati. Navaratri and the Nuakhai festival is the main festival of this site.
Ushakothi Wildlife Sanctuary:
Ushakothi Wildlife Sanctuary is also called as Badrama Sanctuary. It is situated at a distance of 43 kilometers from the city of Sambalpur. The sanctuary is located beside the National Highway (NH 6). This sanctuary was established in 1962, over a total area of 130 square kilometers. Mainly this sanctuary was established to preserve the bio-diversity. So many types of species are found in this sanctuary. Major animals of this sanctuary are tigers, leopards, bisons, nilgai, cheetal, wolves, spotted deer, gaur, black panthers, sambar, wild bears, flying squirrels etc and major floras are Neem, Sal, Acacia, Sandalwood, Arjun etc. There are two watching tower is situated inside the sanctuary, which is used by the visitors to catch a view of these animals.
Hirakud Dam:
Hirakud Dam is one of the famous tourist spots in Sambalpur, Odisha. It was built over the river Mahanadi at about 15 kilometers. This happens to be the first post-independence major multipurpose river valley project in India. Especially it was designed for flood control. This photographic spot is also known as an ideal picnic spot. Tourists visit here to see the scenic view of the sunset. You can also enjoy the charming weather of this place. Boating facilities also available here. Post monsoon is the best time to visit this place.
Chipilima powerhouse:
Chipilima is considered as an ideal picnic spot. It is located at a distance of 37 kilometers from the city of Sambalpur. Chipilima is known for a natural waterfall, which is harnessed for generating electricity. The waterfall is falling down from a height of 24.38 meters. This site is also popular for Mata Ghanteswari, the presiding deity of this place. Others attraction of this place is the state livestock breeding farm and Agricultural farm.
Pradhanpat Falls:
The Pradhanpat Falls is located at a distance of 100 kilometers from Sambalpur city center. This picturesque waterfall is falling down from a good height and surrounded by dense forest. The scenic beauty and charming weather make this site one of the most beautiful destinations of Odisha.
